About the Artist: Edward T. Hurley (1869-1950) was a prolific artist internationally known for his etchings and three dimensional works designed for Rookwood Pottery (he was one of their most celebrated artist). Hurley studied at Xavier University and the Cincinnati Art Academy with Otto Walter Beck, and Frank Duveneck and became a skilled drypoint etcher. Hurley was inventive with his printmaking processes and his materials. He created, patented and sold an oil pastel stick that could be used directly on the plate, as well as "Hurley's Black Etching Ground". Much of Hurley's work highlights scenic views of the Midwest, from landscapes to landmarks, to the shoreline of the Ohio River.
